NEW YORK STATE SECURITY GUARD TRAINING
The NYS Security Guard Act of 1992 requires registration and training of security guards in New York State. The Division of Criminal Justice Services, Office of Public Safety provides administrative oversight for mandated security training and requires that all private security training must be approved and that all private security instructors must be certified.
The New York Private Police Academy® is a Certified Security Guard Training School that offers the following NYS mandated training courses for security guards conducted at our approved training school by certified instructors.

8 Hour Pre-Assignment Training Course
The first required course is an 8-Hour Pre-Assignment Training Course. The 8-Hour Pre-Assignment Training Course for Security Guards is a requirement for all individuals seeking employment as security guards in New York State.
The Eight Hour Pre-Assignment Training Course for Security Guards contains 7 mandated topic areas of study and will conclude with the required one hour for review and examination:
Introduction
Role of a Security Guard
Legal Powers & Limitations
Communications & Public Relations
Access control
Ethics & Conduct
Emergency Situations
- The taking and passing of a written examination is required prior to the issuance of a certificate of successful completion.
- Successful completion of this class is required prior to employment as a security guard.
- Upon a successful completion of the class, a certificate of successful completion will be presented to the student that same day. This certificate must accompany your security guard license application when submitted to the Department of State.
- All instructors providing the New York State mandated 8-hour Pre-assignment Training Course are certified through the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) / Security Guard Program (SGP) in accordance with Part 6029 of the New York State Official Compilation of Codes, Rules and regulations.
16 Hour On-The-Job Training Course (OJT)
The second course is the 16 Hour On-The-Job Security Guard Training Course (OJT). This training program will be relevant to the duties of the security guard, requirements of the work site, and the needs of the employer.
The General 16 Hour On-the-Job Training Course for Security Guards will be taught over two (8 hour) sessions. The General 16 Hour On-the-Job Training Course contains 9 mandated topic areas of study that will conclude with the required one hour for review and examination.

8 Hour Annual In-Service Training Course
The third training course is the 8-Hour Annual in-Service Course. The 8-Hour Annual In-Service Training Course for Security Guards is a requirement for all security guards in New York State and must be completed on a calendar year basis for each year succeeding the completion of the mandated 8-Hour Annual in-Service Course for Security Guards.
This course is designed to meet current training needs and refresh or update guards in changes in the field of security. The eight hour annual in-service course is comprised of 8 topics that include 6 mandated topics and 2 elective topics. The 8-Hour Annual in-Service Course for Security Guards includes the following topics:
Role of a Security Guard
Legal Powers and Limitations
Emergency Response
Report Writing Ethics
Communications and Public Relations
First Aid Awareness
Theft Prevention
- The security guard must complete this course as a prerequisite for renewal of their security guard license.
- Successful completion of this course is required each year succeeding the first year of employment.
- A certificate of successful completion will be presented to the student at the end of class.
- All instructors providing the New York State mandated annual in-service training are certified through the Security Guard Program (SGP) in accordance with Part 6029 of the New York State Compilation of Codes, Rules and regulations.
NEW JERSEY SECURITY OFFICER TRAINING
The New Jersey Security Officer Registration Act of 2004 (SORA) requires registration and training of Security Officers in the State of New Jersey. The NJ State Police - Private Detective Unit provides administrative oversight for mandated security officer training and requires that all Security Officer training must be approved and that all Security Officer Instructors must be Certified by the Superintendent of State Police.
